HIPAA
HIPAA is the acronym commonly used to describe the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Protected Health Information (PHI) is any individually identifiable health information ( e.g. name, address, birth date, social security number, medical record number). HIPAA covers all PHI, regardless of whether the information is or has been in electronic form. PHI may be accessed without the patient's consent when it is done for treatment purposes.
